Master Class Broadens Students’ Horizons

On Sunday, November 22, 2009, the Jupiter Academy of Music is hosting a Master Class with Dr. Anne Louise Turgeon of the Florida Atlantic University piano faculty. Dr. Turgeon enjoys a busy career as a concert pianist, both as a soloist and part of the Duo Turgeon. She is also a well-known chamber musician and pedagogue. Her recording activities have included five CD's on the Marquis/EMI, Vanguard Classics, Dranoff Foundation, and Albany Records Labels. Her performances have been heard in hundreds of radio broadcasts worldwide, including several appearances on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today”. Dr. Turgeon has performed extensively in the United States, Europe and in Russia.

A Master Class is a lesson that takes place in front of an audience. The audience is usually a group of interested students, parents and teachers. They listen and observe how the master teacher works with each student. Often other piano students in the audience will learn something to help them with their own piano studies. The program will be held at the Jupiter Academy of Music, at 500 Commerce Way West, in Jupiter.

The students who will be performing are : Aalisha Jaisinghani, David Tavarez, Garrett Williams, Hannah Baldwin, Joanna Tracy, Anusha Bontha, Melody Sze, Alexandria Huynh, Joseph Culbreath, Andrew Costen , and Elizabeth Isner. The pieces that will be performed range in style from baroque music to classical to jazz. The teachers presenting students are: Asuza Higotani, Ana Soto, Michael Bies, Karen Miller and the Academy’s director, Sandra Baran. Welcome new guitar teacher - BRAD SCHECTER

Brad was born and raised in New York City.

After studying music at the State University of New York at New Paltz, he had the opportunity to tour Europe playing with a rock & roll revue. After 7 years of almost non-stop touring all over Europe, Brad decided to take up permanent residence in Switzerland where in the year 2000 he started “Brad’s Music Academy”, a small music school offering guitar and drum lessons in English and French. He kept a full time teaching schedule of more than 30 students a week in addition to playing in several live bands covering various style of music from Rock and Jazz to Blues and Country. His students ranged from 5 year old kids learning the basics of rhythm to teenagers learning rock guitar and drums, to retirees picking up a new hobby.

Brad's teaching method is to create a fun positive atmosphere for the students to learn their instruments while still giving them a good solid base of theory and technique.
In his experience over the years, he has discovered that the more the students enjoy playing, the more they will practice. His philosophy is: “Music should be fun!”

In July 2009 he moved back to the United States with his Swiss wife and 12 year old son, to live in Palm City Florida and create a new teaching practice. Brad is really looking forward to becoming part of the local community and helping the next generation of musicians get started.

Born in Rockville Centre, on New York's Long Island, Kristin started taking flute lessons at the age of nine. She holds the degrees Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts in Music, both from Florida Atlantic University, and is pursuing her Ph.D.

She studies chamber music with Dr. Ken Keaton, playing in a flute and classical guitar duo. She also performs in a classical chamber group, The Woodwind Trio of the Palm Beaches, who perform in area schools, churches, museums, country clubs, hospitals, private parties, wedding receptions, and other events in and around Palm Beach County.

Ms. Hurley teaches students of all ages, specializing in flute instruction for beginning and intermediate students. She teaches at area elementary and middle schools, and at FAU's TOPS Junior Band Camp.

Kristin is the proud coordinator of The Drs. Andrew and Bradford Ress Healing by Music Project based out of FAU's Boca Raton campus. Musikgarten© classes offer a natural, sequential path to music literacy from birth through beginning piano. With Musikgarten, students learn melody, rhythm, intervals, solfege, music dynamics, and theory through traditional, content-rich folk songs. The best time to develop musical aptitude is between the ages of birth and six years. Musikgarten parent Kim Goins says, “Susan is an amazing role model in my son’s life. Her class is excellent, and my son and I love it.” This program can help your child read music and eventually play the piano.
